Wakae Castle Ruins
Wakae Castle has been through many wars since it was built by the Hatakeyama clan, the governor of Kawachi Province, in the early Muromachi period. During the Tensho era, Christian Ikeda Tango no Kami Norimasa became the lord of the castle and built a church, etc., so it is said to have been the center of Kawachi Christianity, along with Yao, Sanka (present-day Daito City), and Okayama (present-day Shijonawate City). . However, no materials were found after Nobunaga used it as a base for his attack on Ishiyama Honganji Temple, and while it had long been a ``phantom castle,'' excavations conducted after 1971 revealed that it had been built around the center of the castle. A part of the moat was found, confirming its existence once again. Its size is about 380m from east to west and about 280m from north to south (Kadokawa Japanese Place Name Dictionary). Currently, a monument commemorating the ruins of the castle stands at the foot of the pedestrian bridge in front of the Wakae Community Center, but it is said that there are still many mysteries surrounding it.
