Located near Osaka station in the Temma area, Osaka Temmangu is affectionately called Temma no Tenjin-san.
The shrine was founded in the year 949. According to shrine records, having lost a power struggle at the imperial court Sugawara-no-Michizane went to pray at Daishogun Shrine - which was located on the premises of Osaka Temmangu - in the year 901. Michizane passed away in the year 949, and seven pine trees sprung up overnight in front of Daishogun Shrine. Osaka Temmangu Shrine was said to have been established when, upon hearing this, the emperor enshrined Michizane at Daishogun Shrine. In the following years, Michizane became a patron god of the area, and is now worshiped by many people as a god of scholarship and fine arts. Tenjin Matsuri, held annually on July 24th and 25th, boasts a history of over 1,000 years. 3,000 people walk the streets dressed in the garb of ancient Japan, and at dusk, more than 100 boats traverse the river, shooting off around 5,000 fireworks.
