Kawaguchi Christian Church
It is located in the Kawaguchi district of Nishi Ward, located on the sandbar where the Aji River and Kizugawa River meet. The official name is Japan Episcopal Church Kawaguchi Christian Church. The building, which has a simple Gothic design, is a brick church with a two-story tower and a single-room chapel, with an altar located at the rear with a raised floor. It was completed in 1920 and designed by American architect William Wilson. A foreign settlement was established in Kawaguchi in 1868 with the opening of the Osaka port, and 13 British companies, as well as French, German, American, Dutch, and Belgian trading companies, set up offices there. The paved road had sections for pedestrians and pedestrians, street lamps were illuminated, and eucalyptus trees were swaying. It is said that Western food, bread, milk, and dry cleaning shops started here in Kawaguchi, where Western civilization began. It was enlightening. However, due to the shallow riverbed and the inability to operate large ships, the area gradually declined, and Kobe Port became the main point of trade, and foreigners also immigrated to the area. Today, this church is the only building that still retains the appearance of the time when Osaka's port opened (registered tangible cultural property).
