Jikoji Temple
This is an ancient temple connected to Engyoja, and a shuttle service is available from Hiraoka Station during the spring and autumn door-opening and closing ceremonies. In autumn, maple trees that are over 200 years old decorate the grounds.
This dark pass is located on the border of the ancient road that runs from Nara to Namba (Osaka) via Kawachi. During the Edo period, many haiku poets, including Matsuo Basho, visited Kakikiri-no-Sato in search of the chirping sound of the Japanese squirrel. 1300 years ago, a demon couple lived there and attacked and devoured travelers who crossed the Dark Pass. En no Gyōji saw this, preached Buddhism, converted the temple, cut off his hair, and built a temple on this land, which is why Jikoji Temple is called Jikoji Temple. The precincts have been designated as a place of scenic beauty by Osaka Prefecture, and during the spring door-opening ceremony (third Saturday in March) and autumn door-closing ceremony (third Saturday in September), two people dressed as a blue oni and a red oni and an ascetic monk walk up the stone steps. run up.
