Naniwa Church of Christ in Japan
It is a retro building from the early Showa era, with Gothic-style spire windows, an exterior decorated with yellow and green colored glass, and a chapel/cathedral with a clean and beautiful space.
Naniwa Church stands in a corner of Kitahama, Osaka, where many retro buildings are lined up among the office district. A three-story building with a Gothic-style spire window and a highly designed tower, decorated with yellow and green colored glass. Completed in 1930. William Merrell Vories, who came to Japan as an English teacher at Yawata Commercial High School in the mid-Meiji period, continued to contribute to society by evangelizing Christianity, social education based on Christian principles, publishing, medical care, school education, etc. The building was designed and constructed by Takenaka Corporation under the design guidance of Mr. Naniwa Church originated from Naniwa Koukai, Japan's first self-sufficient church, which was independently established by 11 believers in 1877. Perhaps for this reason, the interior of the chapel has a familiarity close to that of ordinary people. On the other hand, the chapel on the second floor has bright and gentle colors created by the light coming in through the colored glass windows, creating a space that is cleaner and more beautiful than the exterior.
