North Mido (Tsumura Betsuin)
The name Midosuji, which runs north and south through Osaka city, derives its name from this temple and Minami Mido.
This is a temple of the Honganji sect of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. In 1591, a Buddhist temple was built by the disciples in Osaka to protect the nenbutsu lamp. In 1597, it moved to its current location, which was previously called Tsumura-go, and came to be called Kitamido. Along with Minamimido (Namba Betsuin), it is loved by the people of Osaka, but it was completely burnt down in the Osaka Air Raid in 1945. It was rebuilt as a modern grand hall in 1964 and continues to this day. The road connecting the north and south Mido halls came to be called Midosuji, in honor of these two Mido halls.
