Hiraoka Shrine

An ancient sacred place filled with divine energy: Motokasuga Hiraoka Shrine, the Ichinomiya of Kawachi Province

It is an ancient shrine of the first shrine in Kawachi Province, and is listed in the Engishiki Shinmeicho (list of deities in the Engishiki). It is said to have been founded three years before the accession of Emperor Jimmu. Later, a split spirit of Hiraoka Shrine was enshrined at Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, and it is also called "Moto Kasuga." The main hall is said to have been built by Katagiri Katsumoto under Toyotomi Hideyori, but the current main hall was rebuilt in 1826. The Akigo Festival (Akigo Festival), said to be the best in the prefecture, is a spectacular and colorful event, with a drum float entering the shrine and a float parade. Every year on December 23rd at the end of the year, the "Shimenawakake Shinji" (Shimekake Ritual), commonly known as the "Owarai Shinji," is held, where new shimenawa ropes are hung and many people laugh, and at the beginning of the year, the "Kayuuranai Shinji" is held, where the rice harvest for the year is predicted using red bean porridge. The forest within the shrine grounds has long been known as "Houki no Mori" (Forest of Treasure), and is rich in nature, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing scents of each season. In 2001, the forest was designated as one of the Ministry of the Environment's "Top 100 Scented Landscapes." Every spring, about 280 plum trees of 23 varieties bloom in the plum grove on the south side of the shrine grounds.
