Retro Romance Nakanoshima Time Travel Course

Numerous retro modern buildings line the Nakanoshima/Kitahama area. The history of Osaka's modernization from the Meiji period to the Taisho and Showa periods is alive and well here, and many interesting episodes remain. Time travel back in time to the "City of Commerce" and "City of Water."

    Osaka City Hall

    The lobby of the current Osaka City Hall main building, which was built in 1920 and was rebuilt, is decorated with sculptures and stained glass that were used at the time.

  3. Bank of Japan Osaka Branch

    It is a Western-style building made of brick and stone with a beautiful green-blue domed roof. It was modeled after the National Bank of Belgium. Granite is used for the exterior.

  4. Osaka Club (National Registered Tangible Cultural Property)

    The building has a unique atmosphere, combining Southern European style with Oriental techniques. The design of the octagonal stone columns and spout in the front is also a beautiful highlight of the club's architecture.

  5. Osaka Gas Building (National Registered Tangible Cultural Property)

    When it was completed in the early Showa period, it was called the most modern and beautiful building in Osaka, and even now in the 21st century, it is still considered one of the modern masterpieces of Art Deco style architecture.

  6. Cotton Industry Hall (Nationally designated important cultural property)

    It has a calm brown appearance that shows the influence of American Beaux-Arts. The interior is a modern building with a high degree of perfection, consisting of rooms of different styles. *We offer two-part tours of the facility on the fourth Saturday of every month (paid, reservation required).   7. Ikoma Building (National Registered Tangible Cultural Property)

    A modern Art Deco style building built by Ikoma Watch Shop in 1930. The building has a historical atmosphere, with windows on the second to fifth floors modeled after the pendulum of a clock, stained glass, and a carving of an eagle on the exterior wall.

  8. Koraibashi Nomura Building

    You can see the oriental design with a modern flair, such as the bamboo and moon motif decorations on the eave tiles and the side of the entrance, and the zodiac design in the entrance hall.

  9. Arai Building (National Registered Tangible Cultural Property)

    It was used as the former Hotoku Bank Osaka branch during the Taisho era. Currently, it has been reborn as the patisserie Gokan Kitahama Honkan, and a sweet scent always wafts from the retro interior.

  10. Osaka Stock Exchange

    The cylindrical entrance hall is a symbol of Kitahama. The smooth walls, facade that references the composition of classical architecture, and Art Deco-style decorations are also stunning.

  11. Hanagairo

    This is the restaurant where the ``Osaka Conference'' was held when former military figures of the Meiji Restoration gathered in Osaka. As a result, the foundation of Japan's constitutional government was laid. Founded in 1830, it has undergone several changes since then to take on its current form. A monument to the Osaka Conference remains in front of the store.

  12. Osaka City Central Public Hall (Nationally designated important cultural property)

    The building is based on the neo-renaissance style, but has baroque grandeur. The ceiling paintings and murals in the special room, painted by Hisashi Matsuoka using the arched roof, are a must-see.

  13. Tekijuku (nationally designated important cultural property)

    This Western studies school was founded by Koan Ogata, a doctor and Dutch scholar, and is said to be the root of Osaka University. This is a two-story townhouse building from the Edo period, and displays valuable materials related to medicine and Dutch studies.

  14. Yodoyabashi Center Building

    On the first floor of this building, built at the end of the 20th century, is Shinso, which was founded in 1781 and serves Kamigata flavors such as salted kelp. Inside the store, the streetscape from when the store was founded has been recreated.
