Sandankyo

This large gorge is a part of a quasi-national park nestled in the mountains in the western Chugoku region. The scenery designated as Special Places of Scenic Beauty by the Agency for Cultural Affairs is a true hidden beauty! There are many scenic spots, such as dark stream pools Kurobuchi and Sarutobi, Nidandaki Falls, and Sandandaki Falls. Boats that enable you to take in the spectacular views from the river is also popular.

Kurobuchi, where a deep river weaves its way between cliffs as high as 100 meters, is the most popular scenic spot with stunning views in Sandankyo. This boat ride is especially recommended for those visiting Sandankyo for the first time as it allows them to relish the beauty of Kurobuchi from the boat.

“Sarutobi Wataribune” boat that glides through a gorge

Sarutobi is a gorge where the width of the river narrows down the most in Sandankyo. The narrowest width is only 1.5 meters. You get to see cliffs as high as 20 meters up close! The view of Nidandaki, the waterfall only accessible by this boat, is also spectacular.

The dynamic "Sandandaki" is 130 meters long!

Sandandaki is a spectacular waterfall that falls from a cliff as long as 130 meters. It’s one of the five scenic spots at Sandankyo you cannot miss. The observatory deck our ancestors created by carving out the rock wall enables you to enjoy the massive view of the fall.

Kurobuchi-so

A popular restaurant you can visit by a boat through Kurobuchi, one of the five scenic spots at Sandankyo. The place is usually open from April to the end of November. A moment spent viewing the beautiful gorge from spring to fall is truly relaxing.

Roadside Rest Area Raimu Togouchi

There are shops lined with local specialties and craftwork perfect for souvenirs, produce stands, and a variety of restaurants and food stands offering extensive gourmet food. There is also a large playground equipment outside where children can play safely.
