Yasui Shrine

This is an old shrine that enshrines Sukunahiko no Kami, Michizane Sugawara. A monument to Yukimura Sanada, who died in the Osaka Summer Siege, has been erected here.

This is an ancient shrine dedicated to Sukunahikona no Kami, Sugawara no Michizane. When Sugawara no Michizane was demoted to Dazaifu in 901, he stopped here to rest on his way to visit his aunt, Kakujuni, who was at Domyouji in Kawachi. At that time, villagers who sympathized with Michizane gave him rice crackers, and in return he received the Sugawara family crest, a plum blossom crest. It is said that this became the plum blossom crest that is still used as the trademark for the Osaka specialty millet rice crackers. Yasui Shrine was built by villagers in 942, after Michizane's death, to worship his spirit. The monks of Shitennoji Temple also stayed here during the summer retreat (a period when they refrain from going out during the rainy season and focus on training at the temple), and so "Yasui" became "Asui". Within the grounds, there is the Kanshizume Well, one of the Seven Famous Springs of Tennoji, which Michizane is said to have drunk, as well as a monument to Sanada Yukimura, who was killed in battle by the Tokugawa side during the Summer Siege of Osaka.
