Taiyuji Temple
This is an ancient temple built by Kobo Daishi and dedicated to the Thousand-Armed Kannon, which survived the war. From here, the Meiji Freedom and People's Rights Movement spread throughout the country.
It is located in downtown Umeda, about 300 meters east of Ogimachi-dori from JR Osaka Station. It was founded in 821 by Kobo Daishi, Kukai, and its principal image is the Senju Kannon statue, which was a gift from Emperor Saga. After that, Emperor Saga's son Minamoto no Toru built Shichido Garan on the vast grounds, but it burned down during the Summer Siege in Osaka in 1615. Although it was rebuilt during the Genroku era, it was burnt down again in the air raids of World War II, but after the war it was rebuilt and took on its current appearance. The principal image, the Senju Kannon statue, has survived numerous fires and is still enshrined there. In one corner of the precincts, there is also the grave of Yodo-dono, who committed suicide during the Summer Siege of Osaka. In 1880, the Diet Establishment Alliance was concluded at Taiyuji Temple, and it is said that the Freedom and People's Rights Movement spread throughout the country from here.
