It is affectionately known as "Sakai's Tenjin-san." This shrine enshrines one of the Seven Tenjin, which is said to have been created by Sugawara no Michizane, who was demoted to Dazaifu, and then released into the sea and washed up on the shore of Sakai Port.
This shrine enshrines as its deity one of the Seven Heavenly Gods, which was created by Sugawara Michizane, who was demoted to Dazaifu, and then released into the sea and washed up on Sakai Port. It is said to have been built in 997. Currently, the shrine includes the main hall that enshrines the deity, the Niomon Gate (a tangible cultural property of Osaka Prefecture) donated by Sakai gunsmith Enonamiya Kanzaemon in 1677, and the teahouse "Kobaiken" built in the early Edo period. In addition, the grounds include "Sakai Ebisu Shrine," which is popularly known as the best Ebessan in southern Osaka, and hundreds of thousands of people visit the shrine every year on the Toka Ebisu festival in January, praying for prosperity in business. The grounds also include Japan's oldest "Yakuso Shrine," which has become known in recent years as a shrine that wards off cancer. In addition, the firefly viewing event held for two days in mid-June in the gardens of the shrine is crowded with many people.
