In the first year of Taika (645), Hodō hermit who came from India built a hermitage here, and it is said to be the place where Buddhism was first introduced to Japan. It is a dojo for Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, and is said to be Japan's oldest burial ground and a syncretistic temple of Buddhism and Shintoism.
