Ryusenji Temple

This is an old temple of the Shingon sect that is said to have been founded by Soga Umako in the second year of Emperor Suiko (595) and revived by Kobo Daishi.On the west side of the main hall is Ryusenji Garden, which is said to be a pond strolling garden from the Kamakura period. It has been designated as a national scenic garden. According to temple legend, an evil dragon living in this area was causing harm to the villagers, so when Umako performed a ritual, the dragon surrendered to the power of Buddhism and flew away. However, after that, the water dried up and the temples and villages declined. It is said that when Kobo Daishi prayed for blessings in the 14th year of Konin (823), the dragon returned and the water became abundant, so he enshrined Shoten, Benzaiten, and Chiten on the three islands of the pond, and made Gozutenno the guardian. I am. The flowers such as water lilies, irises, and lotuses that bloom in the vast pond are also beautiful. The Niomon Gate, built in 1275, has been designated as a nationally designated important cultural property.
