Osaka Prefecture Chikatsu Asuka Museum
A museum presenting kofun, Japan's ancient burial mounds, built on the Chikatsu Asuka Fudoki-No-Oka. Visitors can learn about the origins of the ancient Japanese empire, and international influence on early Japan.
A museum dedicated to the kofun (ancient burial mound), where its main theme is to “Discover the Formation and International Influence of Ancient Japan.” Designed to overlook the entirety of “Chikatsu Asuka Fudoki-No-Oka Historical Park,” the exhibition room is shaped like the circular tombs with a rectangular front in order to keep it in alignment with the exhibits (designed by Tadao Ando). The exhibits are separated into 3 sections; Chikatsu Asuka and International Influence, Origins of an Ancient Realm, and Modern Science and Cultural Heritage. The “Chikatsu Asuka and International Influence” section is where numerous swords and katanas, metallic pieces, earrings, and rings are exhibited. These items were excavated at the Ichisuka kofun mounds that date from the Kofun to the Asuka period (4th to the 7th centuries). At the “Origins of an Ancient Realm” section, life-sized Pit-Style and Corridor-Style Burial Chambers are recreated and provided with commentary on how they were built and what is inside. There is even a model-sized version and recreation of what the Daisenryo Kofun looked like at the time it was built. Finally, at the “Modern Science and Cultural Heritage” section, there will be commentary regarding the various technologies that were used when excavating a cultural heritage site such as the shura (wooden slide), lever, underwater radar and X-ray photography, in order to research underwater ruins. In addition, the museum also offers regular tours and commentary that is offered by a curator and is working on activities to deepen the unity between the museum and outdoor cultural heritage sites. Also classes and lectures, and various other events are held.
