Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farm Houses
The Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farmhouses showcases the lives of the people from various parts of Japan to the present.
Located on the corner of Hattori Ryokuchi Park in Toyonaka City, it is Japan’s first outdoor museum. Within its 36,000 square meter premise, it has transferred 12 famous and classic old Japanese townhouses from its original location to be reconstructed here. The houses include the “Magariya from Nambu” from Iwate prefecture in the north, to the “Takakura Elevated Storehouse from Amami Oshima” from Kagoshima prefecture in the south. Each have all been built during the Edo period from the 17th to 19th centuries, with some having been the actual residence of people until the 1950s. These houses are the result of the unique culture and customs of their respective regions, and often showcases the wisdom of the people who lived there. Inside these houses there are often commentaries and picture-story shows about the house, in addition to tea ceremonies and hands-on experiences. If interested, please check the guides for more information about the events.
