The history of Onojinja Shrine dates back to the B.C. era, and it is also known as Otakebi no Miya. It is said to have begun when the spirit of Itsuse no Mikoto was enshrined in Hamamiya.859It was moved to its current location in 1870 (the first year of the Jogan era). The shrine was formerly listed in the Engishiki, and the area around the nearby Futagoike Pond is home to the Otokozato ruins, so it is believed that people lived over a fairly wide area. Hamamiya is currently a sub-shrine of Otoko Shrine.
