Oimatsu Street

There are many art-related shops, from antiques to Western antiques. After strolling through the streets, let's pay a visit to Tenjin.

A street that stretches for about 1km from west to east across Nishitenma and is lined with about 90 shops, including antique art dealers and art galleries. It originally developed as the main approach to Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, and in the early modern period, many people lived nearby, including Heihachiro Oshio, who studied Yomeigaku while serving as a yoriki, and Soin Nishiyama, a renga and haiku master whose disciples were Saikaku Ihara and Raizan Konishi. It was known as a city of culture. During the Taisho era, inns, restaurants, and movie theaters were built there, and after the war, the number of antique shops began to increase. As there are courts and legal affairs offices on the south side, there are also many lawyers and judicial scrivener's offices, giving the area a somewhat academic atmosphere. Antique festivals are held on the street every spring and fall. During the summer Tenjin Festival, Rikutogyo wearing period costumes passes through Oimatsu-cho, and the entire neighborhood is filled with people.
