Mt. Kongo

A mountain that crosses the prefectural border between Osaka and Nara

Mt. Kongo (1125m above sea level) is the main peak of the Kongo-Katsuragi mountain range that traverses the prefectural border between Osaka and Nara. Near the top of the mountain are Katsuragi Shrine and Tenhorinji Temple, which was founded by Enno Gyoja, the founder of Shugendo, over 1,300 years ago. The ruins of Chihaya Castle, where Masashige Kusunoki barricaded himself in and resisted the Kamakura shogunate army at the end of the Kamakura period, are also located near the mountain trail, and a popular route is from the Mt. Kongo trailhead at the foot of the castle via the Chihaya main road to the shrine office on the mountaintop plateau. There is also a route that takes you from Fushimi Forest Road to the top of the mountain, stopping at Chihaya Park (Chihaya Museum of Stars and Nature, etc.).
