Morimoto Shrine

The deities enshrined are the married deities Futsunushikami and Futsunushihimekami. It is said that in the early Heian period, it was a shrine dedicated to Kudara no Sukune Nagatsugu and his ancestor, the Asukato clan. As a famous shrine of the ``Engishiki'' and ``Shinmyocho,'' which recorded large and small official shrines (shikinai-sha) and their enshrined deities, imperial envoys were dispatched from the imperial court during festivals. The shrine building was destroyed by fire during Oda Nobunaga's attack on Takaya Castle, and was rebuilt in the Edo period by Kakuho, the chief priest of Kongorinji Temple (miya temple). Inside the precincts, there is the ``Ookusunoki Head Mound,'' where Kusunoki Masashige's head was secretly hidden when he was killed in battle to escape the eyes of the enemy, and the ``Hayato Stone,'' a pair of rare stone statues carved with beast-faced human figures. There are still some historic ruins left.
