It is said that Gyoki founded the temple in 744 at the request of Emperor Shomu. At its peak, it boasted a large temple complex with seven halls and over 130 monks' quarters. The principal image of the temple is deeply revered as the "Kannon Bodhisattva who wards off evil spirits." The traditional event "Senbon Mochitsuki" began when Gyoki, accompanied by 16 children, pounded rice cakes with wooden sticks to the tune of a song to offer to the principal image, in celebration of the appearance of the principal image of Kannon, and has been passed down to the present day.
