Bandaiike Park
The name of the pond, named after the legend of Prince Shotoku's defeat of a demon, remains today. It is a tranquil park where migratory birds and humans can relax.
It is a few minutes walk east from Tezukayama 3-chome Station on the Hankai Electric Tramway Kamimachi Line. The park has a total area of 4.3 hectares and is centered around the 700-meter-circumference Bandai Pond. According to the Sumiyoshi Village Chronicle published in 1927, long ago, a mysterious monster lived in Bandai Pond and troubled the people, but when Prince Shotoku sent someone from Shitennoji to recite a sutra, the monster disappeared. The sutra recited at that time was the Mandala Sutra, so the pond was originally called Mandala Pond, but the name was corrupted and became Bandai Pond. Today, Bandai Pond Park is a place of relaxation for locals, with playground equipment for children and the opportunity to enjoy radio exercises and walking. During the cherry blossom season, the park is crowded with local cherry blossom viewers, and in winter, bird enthusiasts gather to watch the migratory birds.
