Former Kuroda Domain Storehouse Nagayamon
This is the front gate of the Kuroda clan's warehouse in the Edo period, which was located on what is now Nakanoshima, and is a tangible cultural property of Osaka Prefecture.
During the Edo period, Osaka was known as the "nation's kitchen" and was the center of Japan's commerce, distribution, and finance. Products from various countries were collected in Osaka, sold there and then transported back to other countries, or exported to other countries through Nagasaki. The various clans established warehouses (han residences for storage and trading) along the Dojima River, Tosahori River, and Edobori River around present-day Nakanoshima. The number of kurayashiki began to increase from the Genroku period (1688-1705), and by the Tenpo era (1830-1844), there were 124 kurayashiki. At the time of the abolition of feudal domains and establishment of prefectures in 1916, there were said to be 135 residences. The front gate of the former Kuroda domain (Fukuoka domain) warehouse is one of the few remaining structures of a warehouse from the middle of the Edo period, and was located near the current Nakanoshima Mitsui Building. In 1933, when the building was being constructed, Mitsuisha donated it to the city of Osaka, and it is currently preserved on the south side of the Osaka City Museum of Art in Tennoji Park (an Osaka Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property).
