Kuboso Memorial Museum of Arts

Exhibits numerous national treasure-class artworks donated by Kuboso, a cotton weaving company. The museum serves as the center of art culture, introducing the best of Oriental antiques.

The Izumi City Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art is an art museum run by the city of Izumi that opened in 1982. It has a collection of approximately 12,000 pieces, including two national treasures and 29 important cultural properties, mainly ancient Oriental art such as Japanese and Chinese paintings, calligraphy, and crafts, and holds four to five planned exhibitions a year that make use of the collection, as well as a special exhibition planned by the museum once a year.
In addition to exhibitions, the museum also provides opportunities and venues for citizens to engage in creative activities and present their works, such as tea ceremonies, concerts, and citizen exhibitions, thereby promoting the city's cultural scene.

Kuboso (Kuboso Co., Ltd.) has been in the cotton business for approximately 100 years since the Meiji era, and has grown significantly to become one of Senshu's leading companies.

The company was founded in 1886 by the first generation Kubo Sotaro (1863-1928), and was passed down to the second generation Kubo Sotaro (1889-1944), Kubo Tadakiyo (1900-1954), and the third generation Kubo Sotaro (1926-1984), contributing greatly to the development of the local city of Izumi.

When the company went out of business in 1977, Sotaro Kubo, representing the three major companies, donated the art pieces collected by successive company representatives, as well as the museum building, grounds, and funds, to Izumi City as a gesture of gratitude to the local community and to promote the local culture of Izumi, which was his hometown. The Izumi City Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art was opened in October 1982 on the site of the former main Kubo family home, and was named in honour of the donor.

There are six exhibition rooms in the building, and paintings from the Kamakura to Edo periods, ukiyo-e woodblock prints from the Edo period, ancient Chinese bronzes, Western paintings, etc. are exhibited on a rotating basis. There is also a lush garden on the premises, where you can relax while appreciating the art.
