Yasunari Kawabata Literary Monument
A literary monument inscribed with a line from Kawabata Yasunari's work ``Sorihashi,'' which says, ``It is more beautiful to go down the Sorihashi Bridge than to go up it.I was held in my mother's arms.'' The monument is located on the right side of Sumiyoshi Taisha, the largest shrine in Osaka, known for its guardian god of navigation, across the Soribashi Bridge. Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972), Japan's first Nobel Prize-winning author in literature, is known for his works that poetically crystallize the tension between life and death. After living at home until the age of three, his parents died one after another. From then on, he was raised at his grandparents' house in what is now Shukukushocho, Ibaraki City, but his grandmother and older sister died one after another, and he lived with his grandfather until he was 16 years old. His interactions with his grandfather just before his death are vividly described in ``Diary of a 16-Year-Old''. After that, he moved to Tokyo and achieved great success as a writer, publishing masterpieces such as ``Dancer of Izu'' and ``Snow Country'' one after another, but his only works set in his hometown of Osaka were ``Sorihashi'' (1948) and ``Sorimashi'' (1948). There weren't that many, except for ``Sumiyoshi'' in 1949. Let's experience the literature of Yasunari Kawabata by visiting Sumiyoshi, Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, and the literary monuments on the grounds.
