Kamigata Ukiyo-e Museum
This is an ukiyo-e art museum that mainly collects and exhibits paintings of popular actors from the Bunka and Bunsei periods of the latter half of the Edo period.
Located on the western corner of Hozenji Temple, this Ukiyo-e art museum collects and exhibits mainly pictures of actors, such as Nakamura Utaemon III and Kataoka Nizaemon VII, who were popular actors in the Bunka and Bunsei periods of the late Edo period. The museum is four stories tall, with each floor measuring approximately 60 square meters, and displays around 30 pieces from the collection. On the fourth floor, tools used to make Ukiyo-e are also on display, and at the entrance to the rest area, there is a curtain in the style of a kabuki theater curtain, with black, persimmon, and green onions. On the first floor, there is a general store selling Ukiyo-e related items. While Edo Ukiyo-e is characterized by beautification and exaggeration, Kamigata Ukiyo-e is realistic, and the actors are depicted with detailed props and stage sets, allowing visitors to recall the lifestyles and customs of the past. The museum changes its exhibition plans approximately every three months.
