Jyoruri Theater

Every year during June, the entire town will come together for the Jyoruri Theater!
This theater is the town epicenter to highlight the culture and information about the traditional Nose-Jyoruri (Japanese ballad drama of Nose) to the next generation.

The town of Nose is surrounded by the mountains and fields flowing with clear streams.
About 200 years ago, after training in Jyoruri in Osaka, Ryosuke Sugimura then turned to training in Nose-Jyoruri, whereupon the first head of this school was born in the years 1804 to 1817.

It is said that the history of Jyoruri was nurtured due to the frequency of its performances, whereupon in addition to agriculture, Jyoruri became the traditional performing art that was local to this region. This Nose-style Jyoruri, with its unique way of storytelling without puppets but instead is narrated and accompanied only by a Taiso Shamisen, was officially recognized as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Osaka in 1974, and as a National Intangible Folk Cultural Asset in 1999.

In 1993, upon the establishment of the Jyoruri Theater, with the new addition of puppets and musical accompaniments, the “Rokkakuza: Nose Puppet Jyoruri” was born.

In addition to performances of Jyoruri using Puppets, the same theater also holds various events of the town.
