Inunakiyama Shippotaki Temple

A legend has been passed down about a dog that sleeps in the nature-rich Mt. Inunaki and is devoted to its owner. Get good luck at this temple, which is likened to gold and silver cloisonne.

This is the head temple of the Inunaki school of Shingon sect, founded by En no Gyoja in the 7th year of Emperor Saimei's reign (661). The principal image is the Kurikara Dairyu Fudo Myoo, whose appearance is a dragon wrapped around a sword, and is said to be a guardian deity of wish fulfillment, a protector of good fortune, and a spiritual beggar for life. Of the 48 waterfalls on the mountain, Kobo Daishi enshrined cloisonne jewels such as gold and silver at seven representative waterfalls, and Emperor Junna named them Shippo-ryuji Temple. The mountain name Inunaki-san was named after Emperor Uda's 2nd year of Kanpei (890), when his pet dog barked loudly to protect a hunter who was attacked by a large snake in the mountains, and later became Emperor Uda's name. He was praised as a ``rewarding beloved dog,'' and was given the imperial title of Mt. Inunaki. Mt. Inunaki has a beautiful valley that has been selected as one of the ``100 best green areas in Osaka.''
