Yasunari Kawabata, the first Japanese person to win the Novel Prize for literature, lived in Ibaraki from the age of three until he graduated from pre-war junior high school. It was during this time that he found his purpose in literature. The Literature Museum, which stands on the grounds associated with literary giants, had opened in 1985 as a place to honor the achievements of Yasunari Kawabata and to familiarize many with his work. Aside from the approximately 400 materials by Kawabata such as his books, letters, manuscripts, ink calligraphy, and a model of the house in Shukunosho, Ibaraki city that he lived with his grandparents, there are sections to tour the settings of his works, including a recreation of his study at his residence in Hase, Kamakura. Visitors will be able to experience his life as a writer and trace through the background of his works. Every year during June, a special exhibition commemorating his birthday will be held. An exhibition of works by artists who are active both in and outside of Ibaraki will be held at the gallery attached to the museum.
