Hounzenji Temple (Hounji Temple) on Mount Daiho
This is an old temple of the Obaku sect (Zen sect) founded by Zen Master Domyo Egoku. In spring, azaleas bloom in abundance, and in summer, 1,000 lanterns are lit.
This is an Obaku sect temple founded in 1672 by Zen Master Domyo Egoku, one of the three great Obaku sect priests. The temple grounds include the Sanmon Gate, Tennoden Hall, Daiyuhoden Hall (main hall), Kaisan-do Hall, Yosenden Hall, Hojo Hall, and bell tower, and are a reminder of the original temple buildings of the time of construction. In the Daiyuhoden Hall, 1,111 statues of each of Shaka Nyorai, Yakushi Nyorai, and Amida Nyorai are enshrined as the principal deities, totaling 3,333 statues. At the Daisegaki Hoe and Manto-e ceremonies held every August 15th, about 1,000 lanterns are lit and many people come to offer prayers. At the end of April, azaleas, a flowering tree in Sakai City, bloom all over the 33,000m2 temple grounds, attracting about 1,000 people a day. It is also a temple of the Kawachi Saigoku Pilgrimage. The ossuary on the temple grounds accepts eternal memorial services regardless of sect.
