Horaku-ji Temple was founded in 1178 by Taira no Shigemori, the eldest son of Taira no Kiyomori, the leader of the Heike clan. It is said that it was built by Lord Taira no Shigemori to enshrine the spirits of those killed in the Hogen and Heiji War, with a spirit of equality between rivals and enemies, and to enshrine Minamoto no Tametomo's Nyoirin Kannon Bodhisattva. . The temple was burnt down by Oda Nobunaga's military fire in 1571, but was rebuilt in the mid-Edo period as the palace of the Oda family of the Yamato-Matsuyama domain. This corresponds to the current main hall and main gate. It is also known as the temple where Jiun Venerable (1718-1804), who was praised as ``Japan's Little Shakyamuni'' and became a priest at the age of 13, studied Sanskrit characters and preached the Ten Good Dharma (the path of humanity).
