Honzanji Temple

This is an old temple of the Tendai sect that boasts many temple treasures, and the clear mountain air and silence will cleanse the souls of those who visit.

This is a Tendai temple located in the quiet mountains. It is said that En no Gyoja founded the temple, and Prince Kaisei built it in the 8th century. During the Sengoku period, Matsunaga Hisahide donated his land, and Miyoshi Nagayoshi, Takayama Tomoteru and Ukon father and son issued letters of assurance of the temple's land. During the Edo period, the temple was revered by the Nagai clan, lord of Takatsuki Castle, and the imperial family, and in the Hoei period (early 18th century), Keishoin, the mother of the 5th Shogun Tsunayoshi, carried out major renovations. The temple grounds include the Kaisan-do Hall and Prince Kaisei's One Stone One Character Sutra Pagoda. The standing statue of Shokannon (currently on loan to the Nara National Museum) and the standing statue of Bishamonten in the main hall are designated as important cultural properties of the country, the Hokyoin Pagoda on the mountainside to the east of the main hall is a tangible cultural property of the prefecture, and the Honzan-ji documents, including letters from the famous Christian daimyo Takayama Ukon, are designated as tangible cultural properties of Takatsuki City.
