Hojitsu Shrine

Since ancient times, the earth and sand within the temple grounds have been worshiped as a deity that wards off evil spirits, and even today, many worshipers come to pray for warding off evil spirits when building a new home or moving.

It is said to have been built by imperial prayer on December 29, 8th year of Emperor Sujin (90 B.C.E.). It is located in a place called "Mikuniyama" (currently Mikunigaoka) on the border of the three countries of Settsu, Kawachi, and Izumi, and was a key point for people and horses during the Nara period. It is also said that in the Heian period, pilgrims to Kumano would always stop by and pray for safe travels. As a clean place that does not belong to any country and has no direction, the soil and sand of the precincts have long been believed to ward off bad directions, and even today many worshippers come to pray for protection from misfortune when building a new house or moving. Many people visit the shrine because of the custom of going in a different direction when they need to go out in a bad direction. The Chimaki Festival on May 31st every year follows historical custom and offers chimaki wrapped in straw leaves to the altar.
