Hirokawa Temple

This is an ancient temple located at the foot of Mt. Katsuragi that is said to have been founded by Kojiro. It is known as the final resting place of Hoshi Saigyo, and there is a Saigyo tumulus within the precincts and the Saigyo Memorial Hall inside the main temple.

It is known as the place where the poet Saigyo of the late Heian period, who wrote the poem, ``Wishes die in spring under the flowers, around the time of the clearing mochimozuki,'' ended his life during the cherry blossom season. . Located at the foot of Mt. Katsuragi, the area around the temple is known as a famous spot for cherry blossoms.The temple was founded in the 4th year of Emperor Tenchi's reign (665) by Kozumi, the monk who trained there in the 9th year of Tenpyo (737), and the temple was built by Kukai in the 3rd year of Konin's reign (812). It is said that it has been completely renovated. It was attacked by the Hatakeyama clan and was reduced to scorched earth for a time, but was later rebuilt. The main hall and other halls were rebuilt and are still in use today. Inside the precincts are Saigyo's tomb and Saigyo Hall, and behind the main temple is the Saigyo Memorial Museum, which has a collection of statues of Saigyo and paintings, calligraphy, and materials related to Saigyo.
