Hankai Electric Tramway
From Osaka city to Sakai across the Yamato River. Enjoy a leisurely tour of famous historical sites on a one-car train.
The only remaining streetcar in Osaka Prefecture. Nicknamed "Chinden," it is still a familiar form of transportation for local residents. There are two lines: the Hankai Line, which runs from Tsutenkaku Tower, located right next to Tsutenkaku, to Hamadera Station in Sakai, and the Uemachi Line, which runs from Tennoji Station to Sumiyoshi. The predecessor to the Hankai Line was the former Hankai Electric Tramway Co., Ltd., which opened in 1911. On the other hand, the predecessor to the Uemachi Line was the Osaka Horse-Carried Railway Co., Ltd., which opened in 1900, and as the name suggests, horse-drawn carriages originally ran on the rails. Along the line are Abe no Seimei Shrine, said to be the birthplace of Abe no Seimei, a famous onmyoji (exorcist), Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, known as Settsu Ichinomiya, Sakai Risho no Mori, which is associated with Sen no Rikyu and Yosano Akiko, Sakai Traditional Industry Hall, Nanshuji Temple, and Daianji Temple, among other famous temples. We also recommend the "Tekuteku Ticket," a one-day pass for all lines that costs 700 yen for adults and 350 yen for children.
