Hachikenyahama Pier

The pier, which prospered during the Edo period as a departure point for the 30-koku boat connecting Kyoto and Osaka, reopened in March 2008 as a symbol of Osaka, the aquatic capital.

It is said that Hachikenyahama Wharf, which was originally located at Nagataya Konbu Main Store, got its name because there were eight boat inns in the past. This pier was a busy place during the Edo period as a land base for pilgrimages to Kumano. The Yaji-Kita duo that appears in Ikku Jukkasha's ``Tokaido Chuuhizakurige'' and Mori no Ishimatsu are introduced in the rokyoku ``Ishimatsu Sanjukokufune'' as the place where they took their first step to land in Osaka. Nowadays, it takes about 30 minutes to travel between Osaka and Kyoto by train, but in the Edo period it took about 6 hours by boat from Kyoto to Osaka one way, and about 12 hours from Osaka to Kyoto because you had to go against the flow of the river. It seems like it was a trip. Today, it has been revived as a port where you can enjoy leisurely cruising and is a place of relaxation for people.
