Domyoji Temple

A temple connected to Michizane Sugawara with a history of 1400 years. This temple is the birthplace of Domyoji powder, which is the ingredient for Kansai's Sakuramochi.
Domyoji Temple was built in 594 (Suiko 2) by Hajinomura Yashima as a family temple. It is said that the national treasure 11-faced Kannon Bodhisattva statue was carved by hand by Lord Michizane Sugawara while staying at the temple. In 901 (Engi 1), when Prince Michizane was demoted to Dazaifu, he visited this temple and regretted parting with his aunt, Kakujuni, who was the chief priest. It is a historical fact that when he was demoted to Dazaifu, he regretted saying goodbye to his aunt Kakujuni, who was the chief priest. It is depicted in "Denju Te Nara Kagami". Domyoji powder, which is famous as an ingredient for sakuramochi, began when Michizane, after being demoted to Dazaifu, dried and stored the leftovers from the gozen that Kakujuni offered every day in order to share with many people. After Michizane's death, the temple name was changed to Michizane's name, ``Domyo,'' and became ``Domyoji.''
