Dainenji Temple (Ibaraki City)
This temple is one of the oldest in Ibaraki City and is associated with Fujiwara no Kamatari.
Surrounded by ruins related to Fujiwara Kamatari, this temple is built on stone steps on a hill in the historic and romantic Awi village. It was founded by Fujiwara Kamatari and his eldest son Joue during the Asuka period. Called Oorikando, it became a Jodo sect nenbutsu dojo during the Azuchi-Momoyama period and continues to this day. The mountain behind the precincts was a mass burial mound from the Kofun period, and has been a place of prayer since ancient times. It enshrines a standing statue of Amida Nyorai from the Heian period, a standing statue of Bishamonten created by Buddhist master Nara (a cultural property designated by Ibaraki City), and a standing statue of Jizo Bodhisattva, which is said to have washed up in the Anui River, and is said to represent a miraculous miracle when praying for rain. . The ``Golden Bamboo'' in the garden is a sacred bamboo that inspired Lord Kamatari to build the temple, and according to village legend, the tips of the branches sometimes wither because Kamatari's head was reburied at Tamumine in Nara.
