Birthplace of Kusunoki

The birthplace of Masashige Kusunoki, a hero of the Nanbokucho period. During the era of Hideyoshi, the land was surveyed and a small shrine was built there, but later a stone monument was erected at the recommendation of Toshimichi Okubo.

Located near the Chihayaakasaka Village Local History Museum, this is the place where Kusunoki Masashige is believed to have been born. Masashige (childhood name: Tamonmaru) was born in 1294 in what is now Mikubunyamanoi, Chihayaakasaka Village, and is said to have studied at Nakain, the family temple of the Kusunoki family located in the grounds of Kanshinji Temple, from the age of 8 to 15. This was a time of great change, when the Kamakura Shogunate, which had lasted for over 140 years, was in decline and politics was being returned to the hands of the Emperor from the samurai. Masashige fought against the Shogunate forces from 1331 to 1333, and was victorious. As a reward for his contributions, he was appointed Kebiishi (Junior Fifth Rank) by Emperor Godaigo, but in 1336, he was defeated in the Battle of Minatogawa by Ashikaga Takauji, who had rebelled against the government centered on the Emperor, and committed suicide. In recognition of Masashige's achievements, during the Bunroku period (1592-1596), under the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Masuda Nagamori surveyed the site and built a platform, and in 1874, at the urging of Okubo Toshimichi, a monument was erected here. The "Kusunoki Festival" is held every year on April 25th.
