Amami Onsen
Amami Onsen, located in the mountains near the border with Wakayama Prefecture, just outside Amami Station on the Nankai Koya Line, was opened in the early Nanbokucho period in the 14th century. It is said that long ago, travelers visiting Koya stopped by to relieve their fatigue and called this hot spring ``Gokuraku-buro.'' The spring quality is simple radioactive spring (25 degrees Celsius) and is said to be effective for chronic cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, neuralgia, gastrointestinal disorders, etc. This hot spring is located at Nantenen, a sukiya-style inn that stands on the banks of the Amami River and has a 3,000 tsubo Japanese garden. The main building was relocated from the annex of Shioyu in Ohama, Sakai City, and was designed by Kingo Tatsuno, a famous architect from the Meiji era who also designed Osaka City Central Public Hall. It is now a registered tangible cultural property of the country.
