Abiko-san Daisho Kannon-ji Temple (Abiko Kannon)
This is an ancient temple that enshrines a statue of Kannon, a gift from the king of Baekje. Many people come to the Setsubun party to pray for good luck and warding off evil spirits.
Abikosandaishokannonji, commonly known as Abiko Kannon, is Japan's oldest temple dedicated to the Bodhisattva Kanzeon. Long ago, the family of Yosami Abiko, who lived in this area, was given a statue of Kannon, approximately 8 cm tall, by King Seimyo of Baekje, and in the 7th year of Emperor Kinmei (546). He built a temple in. After that, it is said that Prince Shotoku received a message from Kannon Bodhisattva and built Ahikosan Kannon-ji Temple. During the Edo period, the temple was so prosperous that there were 36 branch temples within its grounds, but it was destroyed in a fire in 1881, along with many temple treasures. It was then rebuilt in 1890. Every year on February 3rd, during the Setsubun festival to ward off evil, the St. Kannon statue is unveiled, and the area is crowded with people praying for good luck against evil, good health, and the fulfillment of various wishes.
