Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library
It is a stately building with three stone floors and a copper-roofed dome.
The collection includes documents related to Osaka, classic books, and books related to business.
The main building and both wings are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
The library was built in 1904 (Meiji 37) when Sumitomo Kichizaemon Tomozumi, the 15th head of the Sumitomo family, which had been running its business based in Osaka since the Edo period, donated the library building and funds for purchasing books.
Originally named "Osaka Library," it was later renamed "Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library." In 1922, the left and right wings were added with donations from the Sumitomo family. In 1974, it was designated an Important Cultural Property along with the main building.
The imposing building, with its three-story stone structure and copper-roofed dome, was designed by architects Magoichi Noguchi and Yutaka Hidaka of the Sumitomo Temporary Construction Department. Nakanoshima Library specializes in materials related to Osaka, classic books, and business books.
Thanks to its quiet and convenient location, it is still popular with researchers and book lovers, even more than 120 years after its founding.
