Moriguchi History Museum "Former Nakanishi Residence"

Moriguchi History Museum "Former Nakanishi Family Residence" hosts traditional culture-related events throughout the year. Please come and see the stately architectural beauty of this Japanese house, its gardens, and traditional culture.

The Nakanishi family was one of the most famous families in Kawachi, having married into the Owari Tokugawa family in the early modern period and later serving as the Owari Domain Tenman Oyashiki Magistrate. They are said to have settled here in the mid-16th century, and the main house was built in 1555. The current building was rebuilt in 1793, and the Nagayamon (large gate) was rebuilt in 1776. The Nagayamon (large gate) faces east, and the main house, with its square-style entrance hall with a dais (ceremonial platform), faces south. A separate shoin room and a room section are connected to the main house. In 1997, the teahouse, the inner gate with a waiting room, and the kamaya (Japanese-style room) were restored based on a family physiognomy diagram. In the past, the house was surrounded by a moat, and the northern part of the site, which is now a park, was lined with storehouses. While the layout of the main house is not significantly different from that of the village headman's buildings, it has the structure of a samurai residence, with a large entrance and a porch with a dais. It is said that there are no other examples of this type in the prefecture, making it an extremely valuable relic of a local samurai residence. On February 18, 1998, it was designated as Moriguchi City's Tangible Cultural Property "Structure No. 1," and opened as the Moriguchi History Museum in order to preserve this valuable cultural property and pass it on to future generations.
