Matsuyamachi Shopping Street

Called ``Matchamachi'' or ``Gotchamachi,'' there are over 100 wholesalers and specialty stores selling Hina dolls, toys, candy, washi paper, and more.

Along Matsuyamachi-suji, which stretches about 1km from north to south in Chuo Ward, Osaka City, there are over 100 wholesale and specialty stores selling a wide variety of items, including Hina dolls, toys, candy, and washi paper. "Matsuyamachi" is called "matchamachi" in Osaka dialect, and the area is also nicknamed "gochamachi," which is derived from that nickname. As the nickname suggests, Matsuyamachi is popular among local Osakans, who say, "You can get anything you want here." Just before May, the area is overflowing with people looking to buy May dolls, and once that is over, the area transforms into a town filled with summer goods such as fireworks and swim rings. In recent years, it seems that there has been an increase in the number of young people coming to see the old tenement houses that remain in the area.
