Karakuni Shrine

It began during the reign of Emperor Yuryaku (late 5th century) when Mononobeme Dalen enshrined its ancestral deity, Nakahayahi no Mikoto.

The history of Karakuni Shrine dates back to the reign of Emperor Yuryaku (late 5th century), when Mononobe no Omuraji enshrined his ancestor Nigihayahi no Mikoto, and later, his relative Mononobe no Karakuni no Muraji protected the shrine and it came to be called "Karakuni Shrine." During the Muromachi period, Hatakeyama Motokuni, the guardian of Kawachi, donated 200 koku and enshrined the Kasuga deity from Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara. Later, during the reign of Oda Nobunaga, the shrine was burned down in a war, and in 1908 (Meiji 41), the nearby Nagano Shrine was also enshrined there. Therefore, the three deities enshrined at the shrine are the ancestor of the Mononobe clan, Nigihayahi no Mikoto, the Kasuga deity Ameno Koyane no Mikoto, and Susanoo no Mikoto. The long approach to the shrine is covered with trees, and it is included in the prefecture's "100 Best Green Sites."
