Tourist Attractions and Experiences

Janjan Yokocho

The Tsutenkaku Tower is home to a wide variety of delicious and affordable B-grade gourmet food. Behind the curtains is a famous alley in Shinsekai where ordinary people gather.
Tsutenkaku Tower has been featured in movies and TV dramas and is now a nationally known tourist spot. In a corner of Shinsekai that spreads out at its base, Nanyo-dori Shopping Street stretches from the subway Dobutsuen-mae Station to Tsutenkaku Tower, stretching about 180m north to south, and is commonly known as Janjan Yokocho. It is said that this arcade got its name from the sounds of shamisen and taiko drums that used to ring out from the stores after the war to attract customers, and on both sides of the arcade are a row of everyday shops, including a kushikatsu restaurant that does not allow customers to dip their kushikatsu in sauce twice, as well as yakiniku restaurants, sushi restaurants, udon restaurants, and standing bars. As the birthplace of the famous shogi player, Mikiyo Sakata, there are also thriving go and shogi clubs, and it is fun to watch them through the glass.
