Amami Onsen

Gokuraku Onsen, located in a Sukiya-style inn surrounded by mountains, is a relaxing space surrounded by greenery.

Located in the mountains near the border with Wakayama Prefecture, close to Amami Station on the Nankai Koya Line, Amami Onsen was opened in the early 14th century during the Nanboku-cho period. Long ago, it is said that travelers on pilgrimages to Koyasan would stop by to soothe their fatigue, and called the hot springs "Paradise Bath." The springs are a simple radioactive spring (25 degrees) and are said to be effective for chronic cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, neuralgia, gastrointestinal disorders, and other conditions. The hot springs are located on the banks of the Amami River, in Nantenen, a sukiya-style inn with a 10,000m2 Japanese garden. The main building was relocated from the annex of Shioyu, which was located in Ohama, Sakai City, and was designed by Tatsuno Kingo, a famous Meiji-era architect who also designed the Osaka City Central Public Hall. It is currently a registered tangible cultural property of the country.
